The Nephropathies Research Group (GREN) at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) was established from the interest of nephrologists at Hospital del Mar in combining clinical practice with research. The group carries out all clinical and basic studies that are not industry-sponsored clinical trials.
Within this framework, the group aims to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the onset and progression of kidney diseases. To achieve this, it promotes preclinical research using in silico, in vivo (murine models), and in vitro approaches, enabling detailed study of the molecular processes associated with these pathologies and the identification of potential therapeutic targets, as well as new treatment and diagnostic strategies.
In parallel, the group designs and conducts patient-based studies, providing a fundamental clinical and translational dimension and strengthening the link between basic research and clinical practice. In this way, GREN integrates basic, translational, and clinical research in a complementary manner, with the aim of advancing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney diseases.
Group coordination is shared between the Head of the Nephrology Department and principal coordinator of the group, Dr. Marta Crespo, and the attending physician of the Nephrology Department and co-coordinator of the Cardiorenal Unit at Hospital del Mar, Dr. Clara Barrios.
With this approach, the group addresses the essential needs to consolidate itself and enhance competitiveness in two main areas of interest: kidney transplantation and primary nephropathies and their related comorbidities.
As a research group in basic, translational, and clinical nephrology and kidney transplantation, the group is part of the Cooperative Research Networks Oriented to Health Outcomes (RICORS) in the renal area, RICORS (RD24/0004/0003), which integrates Spanish research in this field. Within this RICORS network, Dr. Crespo coordinates the kidney transplantation groups. These types of calls offer the opportunity to be part of a highly collaborative research network with shared interests and provide funding for part of the group's human resources. In addition, GREN is also recognized as a consolidated research group by AGAUR (2021 SGR 00073).
