The Viral Infections Research Group is a recently established multidisciplinary team dedicated to the study of acute and chronic viral infections and their impact on the immune system. Our main objective is to advance the understanding of the interaction between viruses and the immune response to improve diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for patients, especially those with chronic infections such as HIV and human papillomavirus (HPV). The group's focus also extends to understanding the pathogen-host interaction in the context of various sexually transmitted infections.
The group comprises basic researchers, clinicians, and professionals specialized in clinical trials research, with a strong commitment to translational medicine and therapeutic innovation.
Our mission is to deepen the knowledge of acute and chronic viral infections and their impact on the immune system, aiming to translate these advances into clinical practice to improve patient management and prognosis.
We aim to improve the quality of life of people with viral infections, both those with chronic diseases like HIV and acute viral infections such as influenza or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), through innovative research in immunology, antiviral treatments, and prevention strategies, while enhancing understanding of comorbidities associated with these infections.
Study the dynamics of the immune system in chronic viral infections (HIV, HPV, viral hepatitis) and their relationship with immunosuppression and cancer progression.
Explore ways to modulate the immune response to improve control of chronic infections and reduce complications.
Analyze how immune alterations from chronic infections affect susceptibility to other STIs (both bacterial and viral).
Investigate new strategies to improve control of acute viral infections, including the development of immune inducers and optimization of vaccine response.
Evaluate the effectiveness of vaccines and immunotherapeutic treatments in immunosuppressed populations (e.g., patients with HIV).
Our group aims to establish itself as a reference in viral infection and immunology research at national and international levels, with special emphasis on:
The development of personalized therapies for immunosuppressed patients.
The identification of biomarkers that predict the evolution of chronic infections.
Participation in international research networks on infectious diseases.
