The researcher from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute has just published The Machine of Forgetting with Ariel Publishing. The book reviews current knowledge about how the brain and memory work, drawing comparisons with art, philosophy, and even football.
The Machine of Forgetting is a guide to understanding how memory works and how it defines who we are. Through eleven questions, it explores a wide range of issues, from how we store memories to what makes us human, including the possibility that androids might have feelings. Published by Editorial Ariel, the new book by Dr. Rodrigo Quian Quiroga, neuroscientist at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and ICREA professor, opens the door to the latest advances in neuroscience and artificial intelligence research, while also establishing parallels with art, philosophy, and football.
"If I were to lose my ability to hear and started using a cochlear implant, there is no doubt that I would still be the same person. [...] As long as my brain and my memories remain intact, even if every part of my body were changed, I would still be the same person. However, if my brain were transplanted, I would no longer be myself. I would become the person whose brain was transplanted into a new body," explains Quian Quiroga in The Machine of Forgetting.
