A new study by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and Universitat Ramon Llull establishes for the first time a direct link between good physical fitness and a reduced risk of suffering from more than thirty diseases. The study, published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, identifies a causal relationship between a greater genetic predisposition for adequate cardiorespiratory capacity and a lower risk of developing these conditions. The results suggest that increasing aerobic activity may provide protection against various cardiovascular, inflammatory, and other diseases.

According to a study by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, Pompeu Fabra University, Sant Joan de Deu Research Institute and Sant Joan de Déu Health Park, working fewer hours while maintaining the same salary has a positive effect on physical and mental health and work-life balance. However, it also finds that, in the experiences evaluated, the measure may increase the unequal distribution of roles between women and men. It notes that women devote more time to caregiving and domestic work, while men spend more on leisure

A research team from the Parc Taulí Research and Innovation Institute (I3PT), in collaboration with the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) and the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB), has identified a clear association between the accumulation of abdominal fat and premature vascular aging in people with type 1 diabetes who have no previous history of cardiovascular disease. The research was based on a cohort of 179 individuals with this condition, all of whom were assessed at Parc Taulí University Hospital. Despite having good control of blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and lipid profile, approximately 10% of the individuals studied showed signs of premature vascular aging-a key factor in the development of cardiovascular and microvascular complications that directly affect quality of life and life expectancy.

Deaths among patients with acute myocardial infarction before reaching hospital were reduced, during the response by the Medical Emergency System of Catalonia (SEM), by 20% during this period, compared with what would have been expected in the period prior to the implementation of this initiative. Overall, 28-day mortality after suffering a heart attack decreased significantly, falling from 27% of cases to 19%. These findings are highlighted in a study by researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, in collaboration with Hospital de Sant Pau and Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, which analysed data from 100,000 people who suffered a heart attack in Catalonia between 2008 and 2019.

Having a higher proportion of fatty acids in the blood from a healthy diet reduces the risk of suffering from this type of stroke by 14%. The researchers have established an index that measures more reliably than other systems used the quality of fats in the diet of the studied individuals. The work is published in the European Stroke Journal. Blood fat levels can be calculated from a simple blood test. This opens the door to its application in clinical practice.

A systematic review of published studies on service coverage for these conditions in adults, published in The Lancet Regional Health - Europe, reveals this gap. Overall, there is little information about the capacity to provide care for people with mental disorders across European countries. Existing data show great disparities between nations and generally low coverage for nearly all disorders. These figures put at risk the World Health Organization's goal of increasing coverage for these patients by 50% by 2030.

Stress sensitivity increases the frequency, intensity, and variability of suicidal thoughts among the university community. These are the findings of a longitudinal study coordinated by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and Pompeu Fabra University, which analyses survey data from more than 700 university students. The study defines, for the first time, three degrees of passive suicidal ideation according to their frequency, intensity and increasing variability. Taking stress sensitivity into account could have an impact on suicide prevention.

Young people beginning university show a much higher prevalence of suicidal thoughts and attempts compared to the general population, according to an international study led by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute. The study, part of the World Mental Health International College Student Initiative led by Harvard University, invited nearly 73,000 students from 71 universities in eighteen countries to participate. It is the most comprehensive study conducted to date on this population. Experiencing traumatic events during childhood and having parents with mental health disorders are the main risk factors for suicidal behavior. In addition, transgender students are 2.4 times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts than other students.

Following a diet based on Mediterranean diet recommendations and engaging in moderate physical activity is associated with a 41% to 59% lower risk of starting antidepressant, anxiolytic, antipsychotic, and antiseizure medications. The study is published in the journal Age and Ageing and is based on data from the PREDIMED study, a clinical trial on the effects of the Mediterranean diet in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The analysis includes data from between 6,000 and 7,000 participants in the study, all older adults at risk for chronic illness.
