Levels of butyrate and isobutyrate, short-chain fatty acids produced by the gut microbiota, are associated with a higher risk of developing the disease, according to a study led by IISPV and Hospital del Mar. A research team led by scientists from the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV), the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, and the Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases area of the CIBER (CIBERDEM) has identified two compounds present in the blood - butyrate and isobutyrate - that could serve as early predictors of type 2 diabetes in seemingly healthy individuals.

People who take antidepressants experience greater weight gain than those who do not, according to a study by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, which analyzed data from participants in the REGICOR study (Registre Gironí del Cor) over more than six years. The weight increase is around 2% in all individuals who took this type of treatment at any point during the study. These findings lead the research team to emphasize that depression treatment should consider alternatives beyond pharmacological approaches.

Consuming 20-30% of daily energy intake in the morning influences key cardiovascular risk factors. People who consume the right amount of energy in the morning have 2-3.5% lower body mass index, less abdominal obesity (2-4% smaller waist circumference), 9-18% lower triglycerides, and 4-8.5% higher HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). Additionally, having a high-quality breakfast with a balanced intake of proteins, high-value fats, fiber, calcium, and iron is associated with a 1.5% smaller waist circumference, 4% lower triglycerides, and 3% higher HDL cholesterol. The study tracked nearly 400 participants of the PREDIMED-Plus study over three years, which analyzes the effects of the Mediterranean diet on participants' health.
