Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) once again took part in the "Visita la recerca de La Marató" initiative, promoted by the Fundació La Marató of 3Cat, opening its doors to the public to showcase the biomedical research made possible through the solidarity of thousands of donors. Four guided visits were organised during May and June-three in the morning and one in the afternoon-and were met with an excellent response from participants. The sessions provided an opportunity to learn about three projects funded by the 2021 La Marató on Mental Health and the 2022 La Marató on Cardiovascular Health, focusing on two major health challenges: suicide prevention and stroke.

A new project investigating the mechanisms of chemotherapy resistance in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL) receives funding from the Deutsche José Carreras Leukämie Stiftung. The study is co-led by Dr Anna Bigas, Group Leader at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute, and Professor Christoph Plass of the German Cancer Research Center. T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive haematological malignancy that affects both children and adults. Although current treatment regimens achieve remission in a high proportion of patients, resistance to chemotherapy remains the leading cause of relapse and is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Understanding the biological mechanisms that enable certain leukaemic cells to survive treatment is therefore a major unmet medical need and essential for the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Two studies by the Bronchiectasis Unit at Hospital del Mar point to new ways to address sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass, in patients diagnosed with bronchiectasis. The studies are published in the journal ERJ Open Research, published by the European Respiratory Society. The Bronchiectasis Unit of the Pulmonology Department at Hospital del Mar has just published two studies in the journal ERJ Open Research that may pave the way for applying new treatments focused on sarcopenia in people diagnosed with bronchiectasis. Their significance lies in the fact that people diagnosed with bronchiectasis show loss of muscle mass early on and in mild and moderate stages of this respiratory disease. This is why it is so important to understand the molecular mechanisms involved.

The ENDURE project aims to explore whether ultra-endurance athletes can serve as a model for this type of disease. The study received the Grant from the Foundation of the Catalan Society of Neurology during the Society's 30th meeting, held on 7 and 8 May in Barcelona. The project "Molecular basis of the relationship between ultra-endurance exercise and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a proteomic approach" - the ENDURE Project - has received the Grant from the Foundation of the Catalan Society of Neurology. Presented by Dr Paula Encina Garcia, a resident in the Neurology Department at Hospital del Mar, the study was recognised at the Society's 30th annual meeting.

Initial data from this European programme, which is being carried out in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and in the Sant Martí district of Barcelona, indicate that nearly 33% of participating women have received a diagnosis of depression, compared with 20% in the case of men. The European MENTBEST project, which is being carried out in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and in the Sant Martí district of Barcelona, has now reached its halfway point after 12 months. The initial data from the study, unique in Spain and being conducted in five European countries, promoted by the European Union, show a higher prevalence of mental health problems in women.
Blocking specific cellular signaling pathways may be an effective approach to treating this type of cutaneous lymphoma. One of its characteristics is its high genetic and molecular heterogeneity, which makes it difficult to find therapeutic targets. Now, a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology may help to address this. The Sézary syndrome is a rare and aggressive type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma that affects the skin. One of its characteristics is its high genetic and molecular heterogeneity. This makes it difficult to identify therapeutic genetic targets to treat it

The Spanish Association for Metastatic Breast Cancer (AECMM) has decided to grant one of the awards in the seventh edition of the M. Chiara Giorgetti Award for research into metastatic breast cancer to a project led by Dr. Toni Celià-Terrassa, a researcher in the Cancer Stem Cells and Metastasis Dynamics Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute. The project has received the second prize, endowed with €80,000. The award ceremony will take place next June. The project will build on the findings of a recent study by the same research group, published in the journal Cancer Cell. It will analyze the role of the protein TIM-3 in the development of resistance to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and how residual disease may serve as a predictor of metastasis. The expected results are intended to pave the way for the launch of a clinical trial led by the Medical Oncology Department at Hospital del Mar.
