Spanish researchers from the Municipal Institute for Medical Research (IMIM), the Biomedical Research Centre Network for Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP) and the HERACLES Cardiovascular Network are the only Spanish representatives that have participated in a study which has identified 8 genetic variants associated with blood pressure.

The first assembly meeting of the European Project HITEA (Health Effects of Indoor Pollutants: Integrating microbial, toxicological and epidemiological approaches), will be held at CREAL. Jordi Sunyer and Jan-Paul Zock lead two of the project work packages. In this meeting, what has been done until now will be presented, and a plan for the future will be drawn.

A study has identified a new molecular mechanism connected with the proliferation and invasion of tumour cells in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, the most common type of pancreatic cancer (90% of all cases). Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal tumours and the fourth leading cause of cancer death worldwide.

This is documented by new results from the SAPALDIA study (Swiss Cohort Study on Air Pollution and Lung Diseases in Adults) which have just been published in the renowned “American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine”

José Montilla, the president of Catalonia’s government, accompanied by health minister Marina Geli, was awarded the Josep Trueta medals and plaques for outstanding contribution to healthcare this Thursday, the 26th of February at 7 p.m. For the ninth consecutive year, Catalonia’s government honoured a series of people and organisations who have contributed to improving healthcare. The ceremony took place at the Palau de Pedralbes.

Last week the first Barcelona School on Biomedical Informatics came to a close with a noteworthy success in attendance and achievement of objectives. It was promoted from the Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics and organised in collaboration with the European projects of the 6th BioBridge and QosCosGrid programme and with the network of excellence of the seventh Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) programme, as well as the Spanish Bioinformatics Institute (INB).

The collaboration agreement between CREAL and the University of Arizona will be presented on the 16th of February at 12:30 h. in the Auditorium PRBB. The act aims to establish a collaboration plan on the research being conducted by the two centres on asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonar Disease after the success of the agreement signed last year between CREAL and INSERM of France.

Within the framework of the REGICOR (Registre Gironí del Cor) study, an international consortium of North American and European researchers, including researchers from the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) and the Hospital Josep Trueta in Girona, has discovered three new genetic traits linked to acute myocardial infarction and has confirmed another six identified in previous studies on this disease.
