The International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) has awarded this prestigious prize to research on Ewing sarcoma carried out by Irene Cuervas, a researcher at HMRIB and the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute.
The International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) has awarded the Odile Schweisguth Award to research on Ewing sarcoma carried out by Dr Irene Cuervas, a researcher at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute (IRSJD). The study was co-led by Dr Inmaculada Hernández-Muñoz, a researcher with the Dermatological Inflammatory and Neoplastic Diseases Research Group at HMRIB, and Dr Jaume Mora, head of the Sarcoma and Neuroblastoma Research Group at IRSJD, and was conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG).
This research revealed cooperation between two proteins that regulate the expression of factors involved in RNA processing and the oncogene characteristic of Ewing sarcoma, EWSR1::FLI1. This cooperation makes tumour cells susceptible to treatment with specific inhibitors of RNA splicing. The researchers obtained promising results in halting tumour growth using a specific drug, indisulam.
The Odile Schweisguth Award recognises the best scientific paper written by a researcher in training in the field of paediatric oncology. The award was presented during the 58th SIOP World Congress, held in San Antonio, Texas, United States, from 15 to 18 September.
