18/12/2025 - General information
It has been chosen as one of the year’s “Six highlights from pancreatic cancer research”.
The study published last April in PNAS by the team led by Dr Pilar Navarro, coordinator of the Cancer Molecular Targets Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the IIBB-CSIC-IDIBAPS, has been selected by Nature as one of the ‘Six highlights from pancreatic cancer research’ of 2025. This research identified a new role for the protein galectin-1 in pancreatic tumour fibroblasts, promoting tumour growth and spread and conferring resistance to treatment, thereby opening the door to new therapeutic strategies to tackle this type of cancer.

The selection of this study by Nature as a highlighted work in pancreatic cancer is a recognition of its relevance. The research was carried out by scientists from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, IIBB-CSIC-IDIBAPS, Mayo Clinic, IBYME (CONICET) and the CaixaResearch Institute.
