SEN Multiple Sclerosis Award for Dr. José Enrique Martínez

The Spanish Society of Neurology has awarded the scientific career of the coordinator of the Multiple Sclerosis Unit at Hospital del Mar and the coordinator of the Neuroimmunology Research Group at its research institute.

Dr. José Enrique Martínez received the 'Premio SEN Esclerosis Múltiple' on June 4th, during the Institutional Ceremony of the Spanish Society of Neurology, recognizing his scientific work in this field. These awards represent the SEN's recognition of individuals or entities that have contributed to the development of neurology.

The president of the Spanish Society of Neurology, Dr. Jesús Porta-Etessam, explains that "the SEN awarded this prize to Dr. Martínez as a recognition of his prolific research career and his significant scientific activity." In this regard, his work has focused on the study of multiple sclerosis immunology, investigating the impact of chronic herpesvirus infections on the immune system, as well as their translational application to clinical aspects of the disease, such as determining biomarkers for clinical evolution and treatment response. His main contributions are centered around Natural Killer cells and their influence on clinical aspects of multiple sclerosis.

A graduate in Medicine from the University of Seville and a specialist in Neurology from the Hospital Clínic, Dr. José Enrique Martínez is the current coordinator of the Multiple Sclerosis Unit at Hospital del Mar and the coordinator of the Neuroimmunology Research Group at its research institute. He is also an associate professor at Pompeu Fabra University and a researcher in the network of inflammatory diseases.
