20/11/2024 - Press release
The project has received one of the recognitions in the Responsible Research and Innovation in Health awards. The award highlights the added value of the project for incorporating public participation in its design. The PENSA study aims to contribute to the research of effective treatments to prevent or delay dementia.
The PENSA project (Prevention of cognitive decline in ApoE4 carriers with Subjective Cognitive Decline after EGCG and a multimodal intervention), promoted by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center, has received one of the Responsible Research and Innovation in Health awards from the Carlos III Health Institute. The award ceremony took place on November 6, where prizes for the years 2020, 2022, and 2024 were presented.
These awards aim to promote the integration of responsible research and innovation principles into the activities of health research institutes accredited by ISCIII. They address aspects such as citizen participation, open access, gender equality, scientific education, ethics, and governance. In this context, the PENSA study stands out for opening the design of the clinical trial to public participation. Patients and family members, including members of the Hospital del Mar Patient Forum, participated in the process.
The award recognizes the added value of public involvement, which allows the project to be reoriented to better meet the needs and expectations of participants. Additionally, two other projects from 2020, three from 2022, and four from 2024 were also awarded.
The PENSA project aims to contribute to the research of effective treatments to prevent or delay dementia. It is a prevention clinical trial that has followed 200 volunteers with memory complaints-a stage that can precede Alzheimer's disease-over the course of a year.
