As part of the InFLAMES project of this institution and the University of Turku, aimed at promoting collaboration with global experts in the field of immunology.
Dr. Anna Bigas, coordinator of the Stem Cells and Cancer Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has been appointed Visiting Professor at Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland. Her appointment aims to strengthen the InFLAMES project, a joint initiative between Åbo Akademi and the University of Turku.
Dr. Bigas focuses part of her research on generating blood stem cells in the lab, as well as understanding chemotherapy resistance mechanisms in acute leukemias. With her incorporation into Åbo Akademi University, the institution seeks to boost its research capabilities in the field of hematopoietic stem cells and blood-related disorders.
Together with Dr. Bigas, the InFLAMES project also welcomes Dr. Ricardo Henriques, from the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier in Portugal, as a Visiting Professor. Other guest professors of the program include Dr. Hans Clevers, Head of Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development at Roche, and Dr. Sarah Coupland from the University of Liverpool, among others.
This initiative aims to promote knowledge transfer from some of the world's leading research institutions, in order to advance understanding of normal and dysregulated immune responses in health and disease. Aberrant immune responses are key pathogenic factors in a wide range of diseases.
