  Cigarette smoke contributes to muscle dysfunction

  

  This is the first study in which proteins involved in metabolism and muscle contraction are shown to have higher levels of oxidation as a result of tobacco smoke, which could cause alterations in the structure and function of muscle fibres.

  Keys to reprogramming cells and suppressing tumour invasion

  Experts of the IMIM-Hospital del Mar Cancer Research Programme have collaborated on a study that identifies new keys in breast cancer tumour invasion. The study has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Cell Biology.

  A new molecular mechanism which participates in the cell proliferation and invasion of pancreatic cancer has been discovered

  

  A study has identified a new molecular mechanism connected with the proliferation and invasion of tumour cells in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, the most common type of pancreatic cancer (90% of all cases). Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal tumours and the fourth leading cause of cancer death worldwide.

  A study questions chronic endurance exercise in patients with severe COPD

  

  Although physical exercise has beneficial effects for all, even those diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a new study warns that levels of oxidative stress much higher than those at rest conditions may occur in the leg muscles of patients with severe and very severe COPD. The study was carried out in collaboration with Dr. Esther Barreiro’s group at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar), together with Dr. Joaquim Gea, head of the Pneumology service at the Hospital del Mar and with Dr. Josep Roca, Director of the Lung Function Unit at the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS.

  IMIM researchers have generated pancreatic cells with acinar phenotypes for the first time

  

  A study directed by Anouchka Skoudy in which researchers from IMIM and UPF took part, in collaboration with other European institutions, has enabled the generation of pancreatic cells with acinar phenotypes under controlled conditions for the first time.
