Research into immunotherapy for cancer at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute has received a new boost thanks to a donation of 43,250 euros from the Amics de l’Hospital del Mar Foundation.
The president of the Amics de l’Hospital del Mar Foundation, Xavier Trias, presented the cheque to the young researchers Marta Bort, Laura Ibáñez and Iván Pérez, on behalf of the research team looking into the Role of Interferon-Gamma in T cell-mediated elimination of breast cancer tumour cells, a project selected through the internal call for proposals "immunotherapy seed". This initiative is aimed at studying, through a proof of concept, some of the molecular mechanisms used by tumour cells to resist immunotherapy, with the goal of improving breast cancer treatments.
The donation, according to Dr. Joaquín Arribas, director of the IMIM-Hospital del Mar, "represents another seed to help us make progress in immunotherapy and breast cancer research".
The presentation ceremony was attended by the project leaders, Dr. Joaquín Arribas, director of the IMIM-Hospital del Mar, Dr. Joan Albanell, head of the Medical Oncology Service at the Hospital del Mar and the director of the IMIM Cancer Research Programme, Dr. Antoni Celià Terrassa, coordinator of the IMIM Cancer Stem Cells and Metastasis Dynamics Research Group, and Dr. Maribel Pérez, director of the Friends of the Hospital del Mar Foundation, who highlighted the organisation's commitment to research and new strategies for tackling cancer, like immunotherapy. "In recent years, the Amics de l’Hospital del Mar Foundation has donated 115,500 euros, the equivalent of 3,850 hours of cancer research", she remarked.
