Dr. Manuel Pera, new corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia (RAMC)

The Section Chief of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute became a corresponding member of the RAMC, in a ceremony held on 4 October at the institution's headquarters.

Dr. Manuel Pera has been a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia since 4 October. The appointment was made in a ceremony held at the institution's headquarters, in which the Section Chief of the Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Gastroesophageal Carcinogenesis research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), gave the speech, 'Improving the quality of care in digestive cancer surgery: the experience of the Spanish EURECCA Oesophagogastric Cancer Registry'. The presentation of the new member was led by Dr. Lluís Grande i Posa, full member of the RAMC and Emeritus Chief of Surgery at Hospital del Mar.

Dr Pera's speech focused on the development of the Spanish EURECCA Esophagogastric Cancer Registry, since its creation in 2014. It currently includes all the public hospitals in eight autonomous communities, covering a population of 24 million inhabitants. The new corresponding member pointed out that a very important goal of this population-based project has been "to monitor the outcomes and quality of oesophagogastric cancer surgery in the different hospitals, confirming the reliability of the data with demanding audits". Additionally, he indicated that this registry has stimulated the implementation of care improvement programmes (clinical audits) and is an important resource for research, with already published studies that will impact the quality of care patients undergoing this complex surgery receive.

For Dr. Manuel Pera, this demanding registry, which already has international recognition, "may be a model to be followed by other registries in other areas of oncological surgery in our environment".

In this sense, Dr. Lluís Grande, in his address presenting the new member, pointed out that Dr. Manuel Pera's résumé "is one of the most linear and consistent that I know of, and this clearly demonstrates his character and how he works". He also defined Pera using the terms stoicism and humanism, highlighting "his enormous capacity for work, which allows him to keep going and keep pushing when the rest of us have already thrown in the towel" and his role as mentor and driving force behind the Gimbernat Surgical Association for students in the Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Manuel Pera

Born in Seville, he is a graduate in Medicine and Surgery, a specialist in General and Digestive Surgery, and a Doctor of Medicine. He is Section Chief of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Unit at Hospital del Mar and has been a lecturer in surgery at the Autonomous University of Barcelona since 2018. He has authored over 200 publications and presented 300 conference papers. He has also participated in around 20 research projects and has supervised 13 doctoral theses. His papers have been cited more than 6,000 times and have an h-index of 37.
