The p95HER2 protein is found expressed in one third of HER2+ tumors, which represent 4% of all tumors. Led by VHIO investigators, CAR T cells targeting p95HER2 have been engineered to secrete the TECH2Me bispecific antibody. Both therapies specifically and independently recognize tumor cells. In addition, the TECH2Me bispecific antibody activates immune cells within the tumor microenvironment. This dual mechanism of action has demonstrated safety and achieved complete and durable antitumor responses in patient-derived models of HER2+ p95HER2-expressing solid tumors. Published in Nature Communications, results of this VHIO-led study have provided the rationale for the application of a phase 1 first-in-human clinical trial, currently in the approval process, to assess this novel therapeutic strategy in patients with HER2-driven solid tumors.

Conversely, women tolerate it better than men, according to a multicenter study led by Hospital del Mar and its research institute, published in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia. The study analyzed the outcomes of more than 200 people who underwent a thoracotomy, a type of open surgery that requires separating the ribs to reach the lungs. The differences between men and women are not due to physiological or genetic factors but to a worse initial situation for women regarding their quality of life prior to surgery. The researchers highlight the need to consider this and introduce the idea of addressing psychological components before surgery as part of a personalized approach to pain management.

A study conducted by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, using data from the Girona Heart Registry (REGICOR), reveals that people who follow healthy diets have a lower risk of experiencing depression symptoms or receiving a depression diagnosis. In fact, improving adherence to a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, reduces the risk of depression by 16%. The authors of the study suggest that recommendations aimed at improving diet could serve as a non-pharmacological complement in the treatment of depressive disorders.
