  A New Method Makes It Possible to Estimate the Actual Prevalence of Drug Use During Pregnancy

  

  Researchers from the Childhood and Environmental Research Group of the Municipal Institute for Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar), a group that is connected to the Paediatrics Service at Hospital del Mar, have used meconium or newborns' first excrement to establish whether the mother consumed drugs during the last two trimesters of pregnancy

  Hairspray is linked to common genital birth defect

  

  The study is the first to show that women who are exposed to hairspray in the workplace during the first trimester of pregnancy have more than double the risk of having a son with the genital birth defect hypospadias.The study was carried out in the UK and coordinated by the Imperial College London, with the participation of the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona and University College Cork.

  Harmful effects of ecstasy use found to be long-term

  

  According to the results of a study recently published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, ecstasy use causes problems with verbal fluidity, working memory and the speed that information is processed. These effects are long-term and may not disappear, even when use of the drug has ceased.

  People suffering from mental disorders feel discriminated

  

  The diagnosis and treatment alone of certain mental illnesses is not enough. In the future the way in which the mentally ill are perceived within their environment must also be taken into consideration. An international study and the first carried out at local level, has shown that one of the associated effects of mental illness is a feeling of shame and social discrimination that sufferers experience simply as a result of being ill.

  IMIM researchers have generated pancreatic cells with acinar phenotypes for the first time

  

  A study directed by Anouchka Skoudy in which researchers from IMIM and UPF took part, in collaboration with other European institutions, has enabled the generation of pancreatic cells with acinar phenotypes under controlled conditions for the first time.

  MHADIE: A new framework for supporting health and disability policy in Europe

  

  The Italian Foundation IRCCS Neurological Institute Carlo Besta of Milan coordinated an innovative European research that involved for three years leading international researchers and that will allow the European Union to propose to its member countries a new model for disability policy within both health, statistical and social contexts. In this project has participated the health services research group of IMIM.

  IMIM participates in the ESOF 2008

  

  More than 3,000 scientists from all disciplines, politicians and businessmen will participate in 112 conferences and debates with 430 speakers. 20,000 visitors are expected for more than 70 expositions and public events for young people and families. These are some of the figures expected for the third meeting of the multidisciplinary, transverse ESOF2008, EuroScience Open Forum, organised by EuroScience and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI).
