Next October 4 the park will celebrate an open day for the general public. The goal of the Open Day is to present the scientific activity of the centres to the public with a celebration throughout the day. The attendants can participate in scientific experiments, visit the laboratories, assist to a science café and enjoy the final party that will close the day.

Last Tuesday 22 July, in the framework of the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF 2008), the session ‘Doping and society: towards the perfect human machine?’ was held, with the aim of providing a general overview of the fight against doping from different viewpoints: scientific, institutional, ethical and the viewpoint of the athletes themselves.

More than 3,000 scientists from all disciplines, politicians and businessmen will participate in 112 conferences and debates with 430 speakers. 20,000 visitors are expected for more than 70 expositions and public events for young people and families. These are some of the figures expected for the third meeting of the multidisciplinary, transverse ESOF2008, EuroScience Open Forum, organised by EuroScience and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI).

In the PS3GRID project, the PS3™ Cell processor has become an indispensable tool for understanding proteins at the molecular level. Sony Computer Entertainment España (SCEE) has once again demonstrated its support of the scientific world, this time with the PS3GRID project on biomedical research that is being carried out by Researchers at the Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB) at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Barcelona.
There are close links between blood inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), and respiratory function. So reveals a study to be published in the forthcoming issue of the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ), the peer-reviewed publication of the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

Air pollution, water contamination, persistent organic pollutants, pesticides, metals, and radiofrequencies to name a few have all been linked to adverse health effects such as cancer, respiratory disease and reproductive effects. Mark J Nieuwenhuijsen, Research Professor at CREAL, has co-edited a text book on environmental epidemiology, Environmental Epidemiology: Study Methods and Application.

In a paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Associations (JAMA) this week, European scientists propose applying a structured numeric identifier to studies involving human biological samples collected for DNA. This would allow optimised use of biological resources through increased traceability and open new perspectives for genetics studies.

Prostate cancer patients treated with this method have a higher quality of life than those treated with external beam radiotherapy or excision of the prostate. The best results obtained by brachytherapy are in regards to sexuality, the area most affected by surgery. External beam radiotherapy, however, is the option that causes the least urinary dysfunction.
