The study received the award for best oral presentation. It focuses on the use of depth electrodes and thermocoagulation in patients with epilepsy treated at the hospital.
The study entitled "Stereoelectroencephalography-Guided Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation: A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Tool" has won the award for best oral presentation at the 12th Congress of the Spanish Epilepsy Society, held in Córdoba from 15 to 17 October. The study was conducted by professionals from the Hospital del Mar Epilepsy Unit.

The study, presented by Dr Nazaret Infante, consultant neurosurgeon at Hospital del Mar and researcher in the Epilepsy Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, reviewed the outcomes of patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent treatment at the hospital using this combination of techniques. The procedure involves stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), which consists of implanting depth electrodes directly into brain tissue to locate the origin of seizures. Subsequently, these same electrodes are used to perform thermocoagulation of the tissue responsible for the seizures. In total, the results of 115 procedures were analysed in terms of seizure control, efficacy and safety.
The results show that this is a safe and well-tolerated technique that reduces seizures in most patients and achieves complete seizure control in some of them. Furthermore, the response to thermocoagulation helps guide decisions and plan subsequent surgery when necessary.
