Four professionals from the Anti-Doping Laboratory of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute will travel to Rome to join the Olympic laboratory team responsible for doping controls during the competition.
On 6 February, the XV Winter Olympic Games officially began. This year, the Games are being held in Milan-Cortina, Italy. This is a top-level sporting event that brings together athletes from around the world and mobilises numerous professionals across different fields, including anti-doping control.
In this context, four professionals from the Catalonia Anti-Doping Laboratory - Rosa Ventura, Rosalia Ramírez, Deamelys Hernández and Manfred Conjeaud - will travel to Rome to join the Olympic laboratory team responsible for doping controls during the competition. Rosa Ventura will join the management and supervision group overseeing analytical activities, while Rosalia Ramírez, Deamelys Hernández and Manfred Conjeaud will work in the detection of anabolic steroids, one of the key analytical areas in sports anti-doping control.

Up to 3,000 biological samples
During this edition of the Winter Olympic Games, approximately 3,000 biological samples are expected to be analysed, in addition to around 600 extra samples corresponding to the Paralympic Games. This high volume of analyses requires significant technical infrastructure, including high-technology analytical equipment and a large number of highly specialised professionals.
The Catalonia Anti-Doping Laboratory has a long track record in the field of anti-doping control at international sporting events. In addition to having been the laboratory responsible for the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, it has collaborated in every Olympic Games since obtaining accreditation as an anti-doping laboratory in 1985, consolidating its position as an international reference centre in this field.
"Taking part in the controls of an Olympic Games is of special interest to us," says Rosa Ventura, Director of the Laboratory. "The Olympic laboratory brings together some of the world's leading professionals in anti-doping control, and this experience, in addition to supporting our friends and colleagues at the Rome laboratory, represents a unique opportunity to share knowledge, update methodologies and continue advancing in the fight against doping in sport," she adds.
The participation of staff from the HMRIB Anti-Doping Laboratory in these Games reinforces the institution's commitment to the integrity of sport and to scientific and technological development in the detection of prohibited substances and methods.
