The project aims to determine the prognostic value of molecules in the tumor microenvironment in melanoma.
A project led by Dr. Sònia Segura, attending physician in the Dermatology Department at Hospital del Mar and researcher in the Dermatological Inflammatory and Neoplastic Diseases Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has received one of the Jané Mateu Foundation grants in its third edition. The award ceremony took place on June 25 at the modernist site of Hospital de Sant Pau.
The study aims to determine the prognostic value of molecules in the tumor microenvironment in melanoma, specifically a marker related to activation of the TGF-beta pathway, which is associated with the disease's ability to evade the immune system. The research will assess whether this marker can be used as a prognostic biomarker and also to evaluate response to immunotherapy. If confirmed, it could be used to adjust treatment and monitor its success through the presence of these markers in patient biopsies.
As Dr. Segura explains, "Detecting these markers in biopsies will allow us to offer more effective therapies and develop new drugs". The project involves the Pathology Department, part of the dibi network, and the Oncology Department at Hospital del Mar, as well as the Translational Tumor Microenvironment Research Group of the HMRIB.
In this edition of the Jané Mateu Foundation grants, six projects were selected. It is the first time that a grant has been awarded to a project in the field of Dermatology.
