The Hospital del Mar Research Institute obtains accreditation from the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer

• The research centre was part of the previous "Centres Programme" in 2019. It now adheres to this accreditation for four years and joins the group of institutions that meet the requirements of the AECC Scientific Foundation Accreditation 2024.

The Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer has just named the accredited centres under the AECC Scientific Foundation Accreditation 2024, among them, the Hospital del Mar Research Institute. In total, there are 13 centres of excellence in cancer research that receive this recognition. With this initiative, the Scientific Foundation aims to promote coordination and collaboration between the centres and the organisation, as well as achieve more efficient management of funds and maximise their impact.

To adhere to the accreditation, the research institute had to undergo a thorough evaluation process, in which it was verified that it meets the requirements to join the accreditation. In this regard, it was certified that the institute has at least two active project grants awarded by the AECC in the last three years. Also, to have three principal investigators in cancer research, have an ongoing international cancer project or have published two articles in this field as last authors in a high-impact peer-reviewed journal. Finally, to have a defined cancer research strategy with specific lines and periodic action plans.

Once it was verified that the institute met the criteria established by the Scientific Foundation, the institute underwent a complete external evaluation by a specific committee. Now, having passed the procedure, an improvement plan has been established based on the committee's assessment and designed jointly with the Scientific Foundation, which will monitor it during the accreditation period.

The accreditation lasts four years and includes specific funding for the implementation of the centre's improvement plan. Its progress will be evaluated each year while the accreditation remains valid. In total, the centre will receive 200,000 euros for its implementation. "The renewal of the accreditation demonstrates our commitment to quality and innovative research in the field of cancer, as well as the effort of our researchers to advance science," explains the director of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, Dr. Joaquín Arribas.

With this accreditation, the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer seeks to guarantee the excellence of the research centres that are part of the programme, establishing strict criteria to ensure the quality of the centres. It is committed to clinical research and innovation, enhancing the scientific and social impact of scientific advances. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the challenge of achieving 70% global cancer survival by 2030.
