Dr. Lluís Grande, new full member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia (RAMC)

The Emeritus Head of the Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Institute of Medical Research became a full member of the RAMC, in a ceremony held on 29 November at the institution's headquarters.

Dr. Lluís Grande is now a full member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia. The appointment was made on 29 November, in a ceremony held at the institution's headquarters, in which the Emeritus Head of the Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Institute of Medical Research (IMIM), delivered the speech, "Showing the data: a recipe for improving quality in an academic surgery department." The response was given by Dr. Laureà Fernández-Cruz, also a full member of the RAMC.

Dr. Grande's speech addressed adverse events, especially in the surgical field, as well as how to prevent them. He acknowledged that surgeons are not immune to such events, but that their work is subject to particular scrutiny, much more so than purely medical procedures. He reflected on a long-standing project, based on transparency and accountability, carried out in Hospital del Mar's Surgery Department, the registration of adverse events, which has made it possible to monitor these and implement both individual and collective solutions to reduce them. As a result, there have been 60% fewer serious complications in patients. 

According to Dr. Grande, this shows that "We are what we do every day. Excellence is not an act, it is a habit." A philosophy that must also be passed on to trainee doctors and even medical and nursing students, since "Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day after day by many people."

Dr. Lluís Grande

Born in Lugo, he is a graduate in Medicine and Surgery and a specialist in General Surgery, Digestive System Surgery, and a Doctor of Medicine. He was head of the General Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar between 2002 and 2018, when he became Emeritus Head of Department. He has authored 420 publications and presented 649 conference papers. He has also participated in 88 research projects and has supervised 24 doctoral theses. His work has accumulated more than 7,500 citations and he has an H-index of 42, which places him among the surgeons with the greatest bibliometric impact in Spain. Among other awards, he has received the Narciso Monturiol Medal from the Catalan Government, the Manuel Corachan Award from the Catalan Society of Surgery, and the Grazzi Award from the International Society of Surgery.
