60% of the projects presented by researchers from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) to the 2021 call for proposals for the Health Research Projects by the Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII) will receive funding from this entity. This is a historic figure, never before achieved at the institution, and reflects the efforts of the researchers and the work of the IMIM's Research Service.
Dr. Joaquín Arribas, Director of the IMIM, explains that "From the Management, we would like to thank the researchers and the IMIM Research Service for the enormous effort they have made to submit proposals of such high quality during a year as particularly challenging as 2020. Thanks to this effort, the IMIM has broken their all-time record of success in the call for FIS grants. We consider this record to be yet another of the outstanding achievements that help mark a watershed in the history of the institution, bringing us closer to a new version of the IMIM, successfully adapted to today's reality."
In total, 27 projects have been selected, from across all of IMIM's research programmes, receiving a total funding of almost 3.4 million euros, 12% higher than in 2019, the best year so far and the most recent call prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. On average, each project will receive just over 125,000 euros.
By thematic areas, five funded projects are related to cancer, three to cardiovascular diseases, three to neurological and mental diseases, and two to infectious diseases and AIDS. A further seven are in the area of Epidemiology, Public and Occupational Health, one is in Paediatrics and six are on chronic inflammatory, nephrological and respiratory diseases.
